Heaven Is the Home You've Been Waiting For

In this world of fear, trials, and loneliness we often feel adrift--like we're still searching for a place where we can truly make ourselves at home. There's a longing for something more, something that makes us feel like we belong, something that resonates perfectly with who we were made to be. This longing is no small thing to be brushed off and forgotten--it's a guidepost letting us know we were made for another world. Earth is not our home. But it's close. What we long for is the new earth, the place God has been preparing for our eternity with him. In Home, Elyse Fitzpatrick explores heaven and the afterlife, demonstrating that our final destination is not some dull, featureless space in the clouds, but rather a perfected earth. It's a real, physical place that we'll explore with real bodies. A place of beauty and wonder and free of all death and decay. No need to chase a bucket list. On the new earth there will be no end of glorious sites and amazing activities, and we'll never run out of time to do them all. Includes questions for group discussion.

Book Review – Home by Elyse Fitzpatrick

A quick internet search will reveal that there is no shortage of books on Heaven. As it turns out, Paradise is a popular topic and many authors have taken a stab at describing what lies beyond this world and what the human experience will be once we arrive. However, only two authors have ever described it in such a way that has made me feel homesick– George MacDonald and C.S. Lewis. N.T. Wright has come close at times. Now I can add a third name to this list: Elyse Fitzpatrick.

Home is a book with was written for that sole purpose; to make the children of God long for their eternal home. Fitzpatrick accomplishes this from the opening pages and builds upon this desire chapter upon chapter. This culminates in a beautifully written chapter called The Forever Hello- perhaps one of the most profound statements on heaven that I have read outside of scripture. This is a book that you will want to put on your “bucket list” (eh… inside joke.. or more of a failed attempt at wit… either way you will need to read the book to understand). In all seriousness though, you will want to read this book and you will want to read it soon. Pour over it . . .devour it. . .allow it to lead you to the glorious and soul-satisfying treasure we have in the gospel. Then immerse yourself in that gospel for it truly is good news.

Home is written in such a way that it can be used in small groups or read individually.Fitzpatrick included discussion questions which I found to be thought provoking for the most part. There were a couple of times that I finished reading a chapter and after reading the discussion questions was compelled to go back and re-read the chapter with the questions in mind. This is a testimony to the multi-faceted blessing we have in our eternal home; and I for one can’t wait for that sweet reunion.

  1. I likethis lady! Shes’ easier on my mind than the RC one and her books make me cry and not because I cant understand but because she just speaks my language. Other books make me feel dumb but Elyse makes me feel loved. I really like the heaven books but most are just garbage because they make up their own ideas of heaven and not the Bibles. Since Im getting the other book for Joseph I will get this for me and then we can both read and ignore each other lol!

    • I think you will enjoy it Serena.

Thanks for fixing my spelling again!

Oh my Gosh I love you so much Serena! I saw your comment and thought oh boy, here come the haters! You are amazing even with bad spelling.

This looks like a book we should try to read together and discuss. I can set it up on my blog as a virtual book club if you’re interested. It looks wonderful even if it is the shortest review Aaron has ever written!

So believe it or not, she is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I have been blessed by more than one of her books and have passed them along as suggestions to my congregation time and time again. This one looks like it is no different.
