Encouragement For The Suffering

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE FOR MORE DETAILS.

Over at For The Church, Michael Kelley gives two positive things which suffering produces within us: spiritual maturity (James 1:2-4) and the opportunity to minister to others (2 Corinthians 1:3-7). However, because we are still sinners, our flesh has to battle against falling prey to our fleshly desires. Kelley outlines three temptations to guard against in our suffering so that we might be more effective in glorifying God in our suffering.

This is really good. The tendency is to either withdraw in our suffering and let depression get the best of us or to become entitled and neglect mercy. Good find.

Number three got me. I am always comparing myself to others. If they suffer more than me I think somehow they are more spiritual. If they suffer less I am filled with pride at how blessed I must be to be chosen to suffer. So evil. It is the remaining Catholic within me. I was taught so long to think this way. Not explicitly but by example it was what was taught.

I liked his emphasis on glorifying God through suffering. That and looking to Jesus as our example.
