Fruit in New Believers

Mark Altrogge wrote this good piece on what we should expect from new believers. Sometimes new believers change immediately; but all to often they struggle with remaining sin and battle their way to where most people expect them to be over night. Altrogge reminds us of the messianic prophecy that Christ will not break the bruised reed. If you have a friend who is a new believer, and he is a bruised reed contrite over his condition, rest in the fact that Christ will not extinguish the flame within him. ¬†Encourage him with the gospel. Right! Words like this can get you in trouble in many churches. At least in my experience. They would say you are making excuses to not try. Those legalists don’t understand the gospel. They are making a joke out of grace by insisting on changed behavior without a changed heart!
